Fade Friday – Momotaro x Japan Blue 0700SP (1 Year, 8 Months, 6 Washes)

The weekend is upon us and, for the weekend warriors, that can mean a fun Saturday. For today’s Fade Friday, however, that means going to battle. Rawr Denim reader Taro Salinas wore his Momotaro Japan Blue 0700SP jeans for a year and 8 months with a generous 6 washes, subsequently achieving fade glory.

All the elements for an artfully faded pair of jeans are here. The whiskers are well-defined, the honey combs show a ton of contrast, and the stacks check the fade box where a cuff would have left it blank. What adds a definite, yet subtle, hint of personality are the pocket fades. His front pocket and rear left pocket are starting to blow out, but the real kicker are the painted ‘battle stripes’ arcuate. Salinas’ wallet has broken through both the paint and the denim, placing his unique stamp on the arcuate.

Japan Blue Cote d’Ivoire Cotton Jeans – Just Released

$

0

In celebration of unity between Japan and the West African country of Cote d’Ivoire, Japan Blue Jeans have collaborated with the Ivory Coast to create a special pair of jeans. JBJ and Cote d’Ivoire wanted to keep the jeans simple, stripping away details that might detract from the jeans’ unifying elements.

Harvested and hand-picked in the Ivory Coast, the cotton used for these jeans has very long staples, which gives the denim a unique texture. Because the cotton has been harvested and picked without the use of machines, the cotton comes in a form that is much closer to its natural and original state. The leather patch is made of a supple cowhide which displays the JBJ logo and also reads ‘100% Cote d’Ivoire Cotton’.

On the inside of the jean, you’ll find that the pocket bags have been screen-printed with silhouettes of Japan and Africa. The left details the characteristics of Cote d’Ivoire cotton while the right details the characteristics of the Japanese production. The selvedge is the most apparent display of unity and contains the colors for both the Japanese and Cote d’Ivoire national flags.

Since both Ivorian civil wars, Cote d’Ivoire has struggled to rebuild. In 2006, JBJ began a charity program to help in the revitalization. Through this smaller collaboration, Japan Blue Jeans will donate 1% of all sales to the Embassy of Cote d’Ivoire in an effort to help in progressing the development of the Ivory Coast, especially their cotton industry.

Japan Blue JB0416 Jazz Nep Denim

Tired of that regular old indigo dyed denim? Neither are we. But if you’re the type of denim lover that might run in the same circles as Brandon Svarc, this next release from Japan Blue will probably appeal to you. We covered this unicorn of a jean back in July for Capsule Show SS15 and have been antsy to get more details on this guy.

It’s a tweedy looking fabric made in a classic 5 pocket style. Though the fabric itself is traditionally a fall/winter fabric, the addition of a brighter color palette of neps throughout the jean adds some an interesting contrast. Think of their so-called ‘Jazz Nep Denim’ as less smooth jazz and more bebop.

To get this interesting texture, the weft threads are rope-dyed black while the warp threads are made up of a base color of either brown or grey with a combination of colors woven throughout. The fabric itself is a mixture of cotton, acrylic, wool, nylon, and polyester which come together to form a warm, and breathable fabric.

DETAILS

  • Name: Japan Blue JB0416 Jazz Nep
  • Fabric: Cotton and wool blend twill
  • Fit: Slim Tapered
    • Other Details:
      • Natural cowhide leather patch
      • ‘Blue’ embossed buttons
  • MSRP $175 at Okayama Denim

These Japan Blue Momotaro JB0701 jeans have been up in the air and around the world countless times. That’s because the owner, Alex Lopoukhine, works in the travel industry. And, after cruising 30,000 feet up and 4 years in, his jeans have turned into a sky blue hue.

Not only have they seen the world, but they’ve seen Alex into fatherhood and are officially dad jeans. After first purchasing his jeans, he had them tapered but unfortunately lost the selvedge in the process, a slip he’s come to accept and even to appreciate. As to be expected, he’s had several repairs at both the crotch and knees. But, with the countless memories imprinted into these jeans, he says he refuses to give up on them.

Selvedge Khaki Chinos – Five Plus One

$

0

Five Plus One is our weekly series of buyer’s guides. We pick a specific category and dig up five great options along with one that’s a little outside the norm.

Many of us have come to expect selvedge on our jeans as almost a pre-requisite–if you’re gonna be rocking raw, you’ve gotta have those shuttle lines on the cuff. That’s not nearly as much the case with many of the other pants in our collective wardrobes–specifically khaki chinos.

For those of us burdened with a job that frowns on denim (note: not us at Heddels), those khakis are often the only option for the 9 to 5 struggle. But how are you going to stunt in your mainline Dockers?

Luckily, many of our favorite denim brands have diversified beyond indigo twills and into tan ones as well as indigo, so there are a good variety of options available for any selvedge fiend who wants a pair of chinos. Read on for some of our recommendations!

1. Naked & Famous Weird Guy Selvedge Pants

selvedge-chinos_nakedandfamous

If it’s Naked & Famous, chances are it’s also selvedge and Japanese. That is the case with this pair of chinos cut from 13oz. cotton twill in the brand’s famous (although sometimes problematicWeird Guy cut. And although it advertises itself as a chino, the pockets will tell you that this is merely a beige jean masquerading as one…not that we have a problem with that.

Available for $150 at East Dane

2. Left Field 9oz. Selvedge Twill Kerouac Chino

selvedge-chinos_leftfield

Jack Kerouac was a tough, insightful, hard-drinking guy, and the fine folks over at Left Field want to pass those traits on to you in their Kerouac olive selvedge chino. Okay, maybe not that last one. But the 9oz. twill, cut into a slim fit, welt-pocketed pant with heavyweight chambray pocket bags should be able to handle that level of abuse should you so desire; just try to avoid fights in front of the San Remo Cafe.

Available for $198 at Left Field

3. Japan Blue JB0450 Selvedge Chino

selvedge-chinos_japanblue

Japan Blue is in the enviable position in this industry of having their own vertically integrated weaving mill. So if they decided one day that they wanted to spin up some crazy fabric made of sugar threads, they could. But they didn’t and went with khaki twill instead–probably a better move. One thing they don’t have is a chino pattern, however, so these guys are in the same “Jeano” camp as N&F, but the price can’t be beat!

Available for $125 at Okayama Denim

4. Rogue Territory Officer Trousers

selvedge-chinos_rogueterritory

If you want to look extra official, then get yourself into a pair of Rogue Territory Officer Trousers. These true chinos are a great example of how to retain many of the details of a jean while still delivering a unique pant. They’ve got the tucked belt loops, bartacked seams, and instead of RgT’s signature sixth pen pocket, the Officer Trousers have a neat little flap that sits outside the back welted pocket. It’s like your pants are sticking their tongue out at whoever’s behind you! Or not, if you choose to tuck it in.

Available for $225 at Rogue Territory

5. 3sixteen ST-44x

selvedge-chinos_3sixteen

The march of the “Jeanos” continues with this pair from New York’s 3sixteen. Johan and Andrew turned to their friends at Kuroki Mills to turn out their khaki twill, and in their words “The fabric has some heft, crunch and irregularity in the weave that is uncharacteristic of most other chino twills on the market”. So if you are only buying chinos under duress and want to be secretly wearing something that is cut and feels like a jean, this is your best bet–it even has a patch.

Available for $240 at 3sixteen

Plus One – Mister Freedom Sportsman Chinos

selvedge-chinos_misterfreedom

Now for something truly unique, we have the creative mind of mister Christophe Loiron at Mister Freedom. The Sportsman Chino evokes the type of pants you might see Brando wearing in On The Waterfront, it has a relaxed 50s fit, a crotch gusset, bright white and blue pocket bags, a back cinch, and an unhemmed hem for all those freewheelers out there who don’t need the man to tell them how and where their pants should end.

Available for $290 at Mister Freedom

It might be in their name, but these Japan Blue JB0716‘s are black on black and are today’s Fade of the Day. Johnny Howe wore them for three years back when he was a student and what was once a shadowy silhouette has been washed to a charcoal shade. Time spent hiking throughout Washington state as well as the Bulgarian Balkans has revealed vertical streaking, whiskers, and honeycombs. Amazingly, even through cycling, they’ve never needed a repair.

Neppy Denim – Five Plus One

$

fiveplusone_nep_feat

Five Plus One is our weekly series of buyer’s guides. We pick a specific category and dig up five great options along with one that’s a little outside the norm.

Here at Heddels, we love heavily textured denim, but all too often “slub” is considered the end-all-be-all of irregularity, when nep has just as much to offer. Neppy denim is an interesting beast — it definitely gives a highly textured look, but often that texture doesn’t show without significant wear. Neps in contrasting colors can help to show the irregularities right off the bat, but nothing can replace real, heavy wear.

Below you’ll find not only a list of neppy denims, but of denims that look neppy when brand new, not just when worn in. Some neps are tonal, some are white, and some are available in a range of rainbow colors, but all of them are beautiful in their own way.

1) Studio D’Artisan: D1625

d1625nw

Studio D’Artisan is basically the company when comes to neppy denim. Their D1625 jeans are probably the neppiest currently available, although if you are lucky you might be able to find a pair of their 21Oz. X-33’s Christmas Editions on the secondary market.  The fabric used for this pair has an indigo warp and grey weft, and, like many neppy fabrics, contains a high percentage of synthetic fibers — they’re 70% cotton, 16% acrylic, and 14% polyester, although they’re incorrectly listed as 100% cotton.  These jeans use the same cut as the SD-107, which has a low/medium rise and an aggressive taper. Each pair is finished with a black-dyed deerskin patch and copper rivets.

Available for $160 from Denimio.

2) Left Field: Chelsea in Deadstock Japanese Nep Denim

chelseaback_1024x1024

Left Field might not be a brand that comes to mind when you think about highly irregular denim, but their Nep Chelsea Jean might just change that. They’re made from a deadstock 10oz. Japanese denim, which has smallish white neps throughout. They have a ton of great details, like Left Field bandana pockets, raised belt loops, and Universal brand hardware.

Available for $210 from Left Field.

3) Shockoe: Rainbow Nep

n5ptntrmb3xi77icp0f5

The synthetic nep train continues, this time in the form of the 76% cotton, 12% acrylic, and 12% polyester Rainbow Nep jean from Shockoe. These jeans would be simple and understated, were it not for their yellow/orange contrast stitching and gradient of nep colors. The color of the stitching and neps play together beautifully, and really accentuates how awesome the fabric is. It leaves a very simple message: these jeans aren’t about their solid construction, quality hardware, or awesome details — they’re about finding a gorgeous fabric and featuring it in the best way possible.

Available for $275 from Context.

4) Stevenson Overall Co: Old Glory Nep Trousers

dsc_0372_1

Next up is a brand that I wish I could say “needed no introduction,” but sadly they don’t get nearly the love and attention they deserve. Stevenson Overall Co. can’t be truthfully described as a repro brand as they don’t seek to replicate the designs of the past. What they do is create modern-inspired reproductions. I liken it to the tradition of oral storytelling, where the story gets repeated so many times that the details begin to change; the story may be the same, but it’s adapted to the storyteller’s social atmosphere in the same way that SOC’s designs have evolved to match the modern age.

Their Denim Nep Trousers are a particularly good exemplification of their style, taking a traditional trouser design and doing some minor modifications, such as adding curved “smiley” back pockets. It’s made with a 9.5oz. neppy Indigo/Silver-Grey denim, Universal zipper, and SOC branded brass tag.

Available for $315 from Corlection.

5) Freenote Cloth x Mildblend Supply Co: Nep Jean

Freenote_Rios_Mildblend_Detail103_4511bdd3-6415-494a-8c9f-de8d3ef6312c

Like many of the others on this list, this pair’s fabric has an interesting composition; however, unlike the other pairs on this list, this jean from Freenote Cloth doesn’t use synthetic materials, but instead a blend of cotton and wool. It is made with 14.5oz. Yoshiwa Mills indigo/grey denim with colorful neps throughout, as well as an indigo dyed leather patch and Japanese Salmon-Red herringbone pocket bags.

Available for $265 from Freenote and Mildblend.

Plus One – Japan Blue: Jazz Nep (Brown)

JB0416BRW_1

Last, but certainly not least, is Japan Blue’s Brown Jazz Nep tapered jeans. Color neps are super popular right now, but some of us don’t want our indigo jeans to stand out quite that much. These brown jazz neps find the perfect middle-ground — they come in a beautiful earthy brown, and have blue, orange, and dull pink neps throughout. The weft is made in a contrasting charcoal tone, which makes wearing these cuffed a completely different experience.

Available for $125 from Okayama Denim.

Japan Blue Jeans Light Indigo Vintage Shirt

jbj-vintage-shirt front

Rampuya sub-brand Japan Blue occupies a strange spot in the Japanese denim scene. Their quality is pretty spot on, their fits are admirable, their prices are amazing, but the identity of the brand is often gobbled up by their big brother Momotaro.

Shirts like this, however, show they’ve still got a lot to say for themselves. With a raw indigo chambray, this button down collar shirt could have played it safe. They could’ve just gone with your standard placket front, single-button barrel cuff, with uncovered scoops on the hem and nobody would have thought any less of Japan Blue.

But they didn’t. They went the extra mile to create a unique vintage hybrid:  standard indigo office shirt up top and vintage inspired details below. All this made in Japan goodness can be yours for 11,800 Yen ($98USD), but you may have to wade through some auto-translate and proxy to get there. Have a look at the Japan Blue website.

Japan Blue x Denimio JKD-1001

Blending heritage denim with unexpected details, the Japan Blue x Denimio JKD-1001 is a balanced garment ready to be faded. Untraditionally, they’ve started with a black on black 14oz. denim with the selvedge detail running up the inside of the placket. Sulphur dyed, it’ll smell a bit like eggs at first, but that’ll go away with wear and wash. Besides, the sulphur dye means it’ll fade just like their indigo counterparts, so you’ll still get some honeycombs and whiskers.

They’ve gone with a Type II style but have added a few collaborative touches to the mix that are only appreciated upon closer inspection. They’ve lined the body and sleeves with an olive paisley fabric, taking a cue from the late 1960s. And, just to mix it up even more, the signature Type II breast pockets are lined with duck canvas.

Available for $318 at Denimio.

When your denim is so slubby and so irregular that it starts to look as if you are wearing indigo scales, you name that denim accordingly. Japan Blue knows the drill and just released their latest creation, the JB0626 “Godzilla” 18oz High Tapered Selvedge Denim.

Cut from their popular 18oz rope-dyed “Monster” denim with a contrasting brown weft, these jeans promise some heavy and antique looking fades. The High Tapered fit offers more room in the top block and a slightly higher rise, that tapers down in the leg for a modern yet comfortable fit. Additional features include brass rivets, an indigo-dyed cowhide leather patch, and custom engraved brass buttons.

While we do cover a lot of brand collaborations here, it’s not every day that those brands develop a unique and exclusive fabric to base their collections around. Japan Blue and Okayama Denim have done just that with their brand new “Sapphire Slub” 18oz. Selvedge Jeans, Jacket, and Hat. With the help of Rampuya’s Collect Mills, their ideas were able to be put into fruition with this denim, which is made with a bright blue weft and super slubby texture for a truly unique look.

The jeans feature a high tapered fit with Japan Blue original antique gold hardware, indigo sashiko pocket bags, and heavyweight cowhide leather patch. The jacket is classically inspired with a pleated front, dual flap pockets, adjustable waist buttons, and hidden selvedge cuff details. Finally, the hat is a standard six panel baseball styled hat with stitched navy eyelets, indigo sashiko inner brim, and adjustable leather strap. The best part about this collection is the price point, considering the one-of-a-kind fabric and quality production.

Available from $80 to $210 at Okayama Denim.

We all remember our first pair of selvedge or raw denim. Some of us might look back in embarrassment because we sized wrong, or picked up something overly gimmicky.

Not Christian Ekholm of Sweden, who’s sent us pictures of his very first pair of selvedge denim, some beautiful Japan Blue JB0212 that are today’s Fade of the Day. These jeans’ slubby texture has popped everywhere, not to mention the nice whiskers and honeycombs that have their own gnarly texture. After a year of everyday wear, Christian gave these one wash. These jeans are far from done, though, and will likely continue to fade like a champ.

Japan Blue Opens Dedicated Paris Retail Store

$

Opening its doors in the City of Love, Japan Blue recently held the grand opening for their new Paris store, a beautiful multi-level space which reflects the heart of Japan Blue and their endless obsession with indigo.

This opening could signal the beginning of an overall expansion of the brand. Sure, we’ve recently seen more stores picking up the Japan Blue line. But their own brick & mortar presence shows that they’re stepping into the market directly. Could this mean dedicated Japan Blue stores in other countries, possibly the United States? French blue is nice, and all, but indigo has endured. And, from the looks of things, it’s not going away any time soon.
